Slough’s energy centre is one of the UK’s longest serving and most flexible energy facilities. It is a  pioneer of renewable energy. The energy centre is the UK’s largest dedicated biomass energy facility.

The energy centre has the capacity to supply the Estate more than twice over. The centre has six boilers and six turbines which can operate on a variety of fuels. Wood fuel and Fibre Fuel are the main fuels but we may also use natural gas, coal and distillate. Natural gas and coal are used in small amounts for boiler control purposes.

Our energy centre includes:

Two fluidized bed boilers that drive a 35MW pass-out steam turbine. These are now fuelled with wood, having been converted from coal in 2001.

One multi-fuelled vibrating grate boiler that drives a 12MW pass-out steam turbine. This is fuelled with wood and Fibre Fuel. Electricity output is sold under a Non Fossil Fuel Obligation contract.

We operate under strict regulation from the Environment Agency based on European legislation. Environmental compliance with all applicable legislation is a top priority.
