Slough Heat and Power Limited is wholly owned by Scottish and Southern Energy PLC.

The energy centre was first built in the 1920s to ensure that Slough Trading Estate properties were continuously supplied with steam and electricity.

The use, nature and character of the workspace on Slough Trading Estate has been continually altered, upgraded, rebuilt and managed to meet new industrial and commercial needs. Similarly, the energy centre has been modernised to supply the  changing needs of customers.

Energy cost, security and quality of service remain priorities for us. Environmental issues have also come to the fore. Advanced, responsible thinking on the part of Slough Heat and Power and our parent company led to substantial investments to operate the energy centre on renewable fuels - wood and Fibre Fuel.

We have established a fully owned subsidiary, Fibre Fuel Limited, which processes non-recyclable paper and card packaging into fuel cubes for use in the energy centre.

The centre now avoids emissions of gases causing climate change, while providing markets for local wood-based enterprises and other businesses with non-recyclable materials.

What Slough Heat and Power have demonstrated is that use of a renewable resource not only reduces emissions of greenhouse gases but has additional benefits which contribute to cleaner air and reduction of waste. This has been an excellent example of a company that has adapted its operations for the benefit of the environment as a whole.

Dr Mike Nicholas, Environment Agency.

Slough Heat and Power’s conversion from coal to wood fuel in 2001 was a brave step, their energy centre is an important contribution to renewable energy generation in the South of England, and it is an ongoing demonstration of what can be achieved by innovative commercial players.

Dr Keith Richards OBE, Managing Director, Thames Valley Energy Limited
